Mit der Freeware "Windows Firewall Notifier" wird die Firewall von Windows um eine zusätzliche grafische Oberfläche erweitert.
Die integrierte Firewall verrichtet eigentlich gute Dienste, nur bekommt man davon nichts mit. Wer über Ein- und Ausgehende Verbindungen informiert sein möchte und diese Verbindungen auch selber erlauben oder verbieten möchte, der bekommt mit dieser Freeware die Möglichkeit dazu.

Das Netfilter-Projekt hat den Iptables-Nachfolger Nftables in der Version 0.4 veröffentlicht. Nftables kommuniziert ebenso wie Iptables mit dem Paketfilter Netfilter des Linux-Kernels und kann genutzt werden, um die Firewall zu konfigurieren. Mittels Netfilter lassen sich Pakete blocken, umleiten oder manipulieren.

Nftables 0.4 bringt neben vielen Fehlerkorrekturen auch eine Menge Neuerungen mit, die die Funktionalitäten moderner Kernel ansprechen können. Dazu zählen beispielsweise, dass globale Regelwerke und vollständiges Logging unterstützt werden. Mit den globalen Regelwerken, die ab Kernel 3.18 möglich sind, können Anwender alle zur Firewall gehörigen Tabellen, Ketten und Regeln mit nur einer Anweisung auflisten oder löschen. Davon sind Tabellen für ip, ip6, inet, bridge und arp betroffen. Anwender können den Kernel (>=3.16) anweisen, ihre Regelsets für Speicherverbrauch oder Performance zu optimieren. Ab einem Kernel 3.14 werden Rejecs für ip, ip6 und inet vollständig unterstützt. Ab einem Kernel 3.18 unterstützt nftables Bridges und Icmpx-Abstraktion.

Das für NAT wichtige Masquerading können Administratoren mit Nftables konfigureren, wenn sie einen Kernel 3.18 oder neuer haben. Mit Weiterleitungen kommt Nftables ab einem Kernel 3.19-rc klar. Nftables 0.4 kennt die NAT-Flags random, fully-random und persistent und beherrscht im Zusammenspiel mit einem Kernel 3.16 Konsistenzprüfungen für Störungen zwischen Updates und Ruleset-Dumps. Ein neues Python-Script führt automatische Regressionstests durch und libreadline und debug lassen sich vor dem Kompilieren via configure ausschalten. Die Entwickler nahmen noch einige Syntaxänderungen vor. Jetzt werden Queue-Flags als Komma-separierte Liste übergeben und URL-Namen werden standardmäßig nicht mehr aufgelöst. Alle Neuerungen und Fehlerbehebungen sind in der Ankündigung aufgeführt.

Nftables wird in C umgesetzt und unter der GPL veröffentlicht. Die aktuelle Version 0.4 ist als Tar-Archiv auf der Projekt-Webseite oder via git://git.netfilter.org/nftables erhältlich.

TinyWall ist eine zweite Verteidigungslinie hinter der in Windows eingebauten Firewall. Die Freeware kontrolliert den ein- und ausgehenden Datenfluss und blockt unautorisierten Datenaustausch.

TinyWall verzichtet bewusst auf Popup-Meldungen an den Anwender. Statt dessen arbeitet die Sicherheitssoftware mit so genannten White-Listen. Bis auf die wichtigsten Windows-Dienste blockt TinyWall zunächst alle Apps die eine Datenverbindung aufbauen wollen. Um eine Freigabe zu erhalten, steuert man die Software via dem Programmmenü in der Taskleiste. Hier editiert man mit wenigen Mausklicks die Verbindungsfreigabe sowie die Whitelist oder deaktiviert die Firewall.

Mit dem kostenlosen TinyWall verbessern sicherheitsbewusste Nutzer ihren Schutz bei Ausflügen ins Netz. Die Freeware sollte jedoch immer nur als sinnvolle Ergänzung zu einer bestehenden Firewall beziehungsweise Antivirensoftware angesehen werden.

Der Entwickler der Open-Source-Firewall Monowall hat die Beendigung des Projektes bekanntgegeben. Eine zeitgemäßere Gratis-Alternative soll nun das Erbe antreten.

Der Initiator und Programmierer Manuel Kasper streicht die Segel und gibt die kostenlose Monowall-Firewall auf. Er begründet dies damit, dass es mittlerweile bessere, aktiv entwickelte Lösungen gibt. Kasper startete das Open-Source-Projekt vor nunmehr zwölf Jahren.

In puncto Funktionsumfang muss sich die Monowall keineswegs vor kommerziellen Produkten verstecken und lockt unter anderem mit vielfältigen Filtermöglichkeiten, DNS- und DHCP-Server und IPv6-Unterstützung. Dabei kommt die Firewall als eigenständiges Betriebssystem auf FreeBSD-Basis daher und fühlt sich auch auf leistungsschwächeren Computern und eingebetteten Systemen wohl.

Der Einsatz der Firewall ist prinzipiell zwar noch vorstellbar, Kasper zufolge gibt es aber keine neuen Versionen und Sicherheitsupdates mehr. Die letzte Version (1.8.1) veröffentlichte der Programmierer Mitte Januar dieses Jahres. Ende dieses Monats will er dann die Mailingliste und das Forum schließen. Die archivierten Inhalte sollen dann gesammelt zum Abruf bereitstehen.

Die Monowall habe andere Sicherheitsprojekte aus dem Open-Source-Bereich erst ermöglicht und etwa pfSense und FreeNAS bauen auf diese Fundamente. Im gleichen Atemzug verweist Kasper auf den neuesten Sprössling OPNsense, der den BSD-Lizenz-Ansatz von Monowall weiterführen soll.

Mit der kostenlosen Comodo Firewall kommt ein umfassender Sicherheitswächter auf den Rechner. Der virtuelle Türsteher hat Firewall und einen so genannten pro-aktiven Schutz an Bord.

Die Firewall schützt im Hintergrund vor möglichen Gefahren aus dem Internet. Im Zweifelsfall fragt die Freeware bei dem Anwender per Bildschirmdialog nach. Je nach Bedarf blockiert man einzelne Anwendungen oder gibt den Weg frei.
Auf Wunsch kann der Browser oder ein sonstiges Programm in einer sicheren Sandbox ausgeführt werden.
Während der Installation sollte man ein wenig die Augen aufhalten, da sonst Programme installiert oder auch Einstellungen vorgenommen werden, die man evtl. nicht möchte. Im ersten Bild auch Einstellungen über "Installation anpassen" nicht vergessen.
