Nach einer langen Testphase steht ab sofort die finale Version des Browsers Firefox 3.5 zum Download bereit. Sie bringt zahlreiche Neuerungen mit. Mozilla selbst bezeichnet die neue Version als "Upgrade für das Web".

Ein Umstieg auf Firefox 3.5 ist in den meisten Fällen problemlos möglich. Gespeicherte Daten und persönliche Einstellungen werden übernommen. Aufgrund der langen Testphase hatten die Entwickler von Erweiterungen genügend Zeit, um ihre kleinen Programme anzupassen. Für die meisten Extensions steht also bereits ein Update bereit, das mit Firefox 3.5 kompatibel ist.

Neue JavaScript-Engine

Mozilla hat seinem Browser ein deutlich größeres Update verpasst, als ursprünglich geplant war. Dabei konzentrierte man sich vor allem auf die Performance, die sich deutlich verbessert haben soll. Die neue JavaScript-Engine TraceMonkey trägt einen großen Teil dazu bei, was auch die ersten Benchmarks bestätigen. Lediglich Chrome 2 von Google Safari 4 von Apple sind in dieser Disziplin noch schneller.

Bei TraceMonkey handelt es sich um einen tracebasierten JIT-Compiler, d.h. er setzt auf das Konzept der "trace trees". Dieses wurde an der Universität von Kalifornien entwickelt. Der dazugehörige Mechanismus zeichnet die unterschiedlichen Pfade auf, die beim Durchlaufen einer Schleife entstehen können. Der daraus generierte Code kann später erneut genutzt werden, wenn einer der Pfade erreicht wird.

Zudem bringt TraceMonkey eine native JSON-Unterstützung mit. Daten, die in diesem Format vorliegen, müssen nun nicht mehr mittels JavaScript geparst werden, sondern Firefox selbst kümmert sich darum. Entwickler können jetzt das Selectors-API nutzen, um einen schnelleren Zugriff auf DOM-Elemente zu bekommen. Bisher musste man in den meisten Fällen mit einer Schleife nach Elementen im DOM suchen, was die Performance deutlich verschlechterte.

Insgesamt konnte Mozilla auch die Darstellung von Webseiten beschleunigen. Dazu kommt das so geannnte spekulative Parsen zum Einsatz. Links, die man auf einer Webseite findet, öffnen sich schneller, da bereits im Hintergrund der DNS-Server kontaktiert wird (DNS Prefetching). Klickt man den Link an, ist die IP-Adresse bereits bekannt und die Daten können sofort übertragen werden.

Neue Funktionen aus HTML 5

Viele Neuerungen stammen aus HTML 5 und sind in erster Linie für Web-Entwickler interessant. Aber auch die Nutzer profitieren davon, denn der Browser wird dank der Unterstützung des kommenden Standards immer mehr zu einer Plattform für Applikationen. Beispielsweise lassen sich Webmailer wie GMail auch ohne Internetverbindung nutzen. Zudem können persönliche Daten ausschließlich auf der lokalen Festplatte abgelegt werden, um sie vor Dritten zu schützen. Vor allem bei der Online-Finanzverwaltung ist dies sinnvoll.

HTML 5 ermöglicht auch ein neues Firefox-Feature namens "Open Video". Die Audio- und Videotags aus HTML 5 werden mit den freien Codecs Ogg Vorbis und Ogg Theora kombiniert. Dadurch lassen sich Web-Videos, die davon Gebrauch machen, ohne zusätzliche Plug-Ins abspielen und herunterladen. Die Steuerung erfolgt mit Hilfe von JavaScript. Auch Opera will dies in seinen Browser implementieren. Apple setzt bei Safari zwar ebenfalls auf die Audio- und Video-Tags aus HTML 5, jedoch wird H.264 als Codec verwendet.

Positionsbestimmung mit dem Geolocation API

Eine weitere Neuerung aus Firefox 3.5 ist das Geolocation API. Die Schnittstelle ermöglicht es einer Internetseite, Informationen über den Aufenthaltsort des Nutzers abzufragen. Entwickler können somit ortsbezogene Dienste auf die Beine stellen, ohne auf die direkten Eingaben des Nutzers angewiesen zu sein. Aus Sicherheitsgründen muss man jedoch jeder einzelnen Webseite den Zugriff auf diese Informationen genehmigen. Die Positionsbestimmung erfolgt anhand der IP-Adresse sowie WLAN-Access-Points in der Nähe.

Spurenlos Surfen

Zu den bekanntesten Neuerungen dürfte der Private Browsing Modus gehören. Ist dieser aktiv, hinterlässt man beim Surfen keine Spuren auf der lokalen Festplatte. Im Internet ist man aber weiterhin nicht anonym. Dazu erzeugt Firefox zeitlich begrenzte Datenbanken für Cookies und andere Informationen, die nach dem Schließen des Private Browsing Modus wieder gelöscht werden.

Webfonts und weitere Neuerungen

Ebenfalls neu ist die Unterstützung von Webfonts. Webdesigner können damit neue Schriftarten definieren und mit ihrer Webseite verknüpfen. Besucht man diese Seite und hat die benötigte Schriftart nicht installiert, kann man sie einfach über den Browser herunterladen. Inzwischen wird dieses Feature von Safari, vom Internet Explorer sowie Opera 10 unterstützt.

Neben diesen größeren Neuerungen bietet Firefox 3.5 auch viele kleine aber dennoch nützliche Updates. So werden neue Funktionen aus CSS 3 unterstützt, beispielsweise Media-Querys und CSS-Transforms. Mausgesten lassen sich nun an Web-Applikationen weitergeben, indem Firefox 3.5 spezielle DOM-Ereignisse zur Verfügung stellt. Zudem sind Aufrufe über XMLHttpRequest jetzt auch über die Domaingrenzen hinweg möglich, ohne dabei die Sicherheit zu gefährden.

SMP-Unterstützung für Gastsysteme

Sun hat die fertige Version der Virtualisierungslösung VirtualBox 3.0 veröffentlicht. Die bietet 3D-Funktionen für die Gastsysteme und erlaubt es, Gästen mehrere virtuelle Prozessoren zuzuweisen. Sun bietet kommerziellen Support für die Software an.
VirtualBox 3.0 unterstützt den SMP-Betrieb (Symmetric Multiprocessing) von Gästen. So lassen sich einer virtuellen Maschine bis zu 32 Prozessoren zur Verfügung stellen. Die Funktion ist allerdings nur auf Computern mit VT-x oder AMD-V verfügbar. Für Windows-, Linux- und Solaris-Gäste gibt es außerdem Unterstützung für OpenGL 2.0.

In Windows-Gästen sollen jetzt auch Anwendungen laufen, die Direct3D 8 oder 9 verwenden. Diese neue Funktion ist allerdings noch als experimentell gekennzeichnet. Voraussetzung für beide 3D-Funktionen ist eine entsprechende Grafikkarte im Host.

Weitere Änderungen und Fehlerkorrekturen sind im Changelog aufgelistet. Unter anderem gibt es eine bessere Unterstützung für USB-Geräte und APIs, um eine Webkonsole entwickeln zu können.

It has built in support for the command line interpreters on both Windows 95/98/Me and Windows 2000/XP/Vista as well as the ability to customize using simple DOS commands by editing the .bat file within CommandPromptPortable\Data\batch after you've run it once. Für die meisten Programme und Internetdienste benötigt man heutzutage aus Sicherheitsgründen viele und vor allem unterschiedliche Passwörter. KeePass ist perfekt um bei einer größeren Liste an Zugangsdaten den Überblick zu behalten.

Die Passwörter werden in einer Datenbank gespeichert und mit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) und dem Twofish Algorithmus verschlüsselt. Diese Verschlüsselung ist überdurchschnittlich sicher und wird unter anderem auch von Banken eingesetzt.
Damit nur Sie an Ihre Daten kommen, versiegeln Sie die Datenbank mit einem -Passwort oder legen eine Key-Disk, entweder auf CD oder Diskette, an.

Alle seine Passwörter kann man sich in TXT-, HTML-, XML- oder CSV-Dateien auflisten lassen. Auch das Bearbeiten und Übertragen von den Datenbanken geht spielend leicht von der Hand. Als besonderes Schmankerl kann das Programm auch eigene Passwörter erstellen. Dabei können bestimmte Dinge wie Länge und Wahl der Zeichen vordefiniert werden.

Das Programm ist ursprünglich in Englisch, eine deutsche Sprachdatei lässt sich auf der Hersteller-Webseite herunterladen.
