Patrick Williams, einer der Entwickler des BitTorrent-Teams, hat mit uChat die Beta-Version einer Chat-Plattform veröffentlicht, die vollständig auf Peer-to-Peer-Technologien basiert. Ein zentraler Server, über den die Nutzer miteinander in Kontakt gebracht werden, wird bei dem System nicht mehr benötigt.

Bei der Entwicklung von uChat waren drei wesentliche Schwierigkeiten zu meistern, so Williams: Die Verbindung der Chat-Teilnehmer, die Schaffung eines zentralen Verzeichnisses der einzelnen Chat-Räume sowie die Organisation von Kontaktlisten. Viele Probleme konnten dabei durch die Verwendung von Magnet-Links gelöst werden, die auch schon seit einiger Zeit bei BitTorrent zum Einsatz kommen und die bisher genutzten Torrent-Files überflüssig machen.

So wird nun auch jeder Chat-Raum durch einen Magnet-Link repräsentiert - ähnlich einer Datei im BitTorrent-Netz. Die anderen Chat-Nutzer sind an diese Instanz dann auf vergleichbare Art angebunden, wie die Schwarm-Teilnehmer an ein File. Auf diesem Weg kann faktisch eine Kommunikations-Plattform entstehen, die von außen nicht so einfach abgeschaltet werden kann wie ein Chat mit einem zentralen Server.

Einige Funktionen konnten bisher noch nicht implementiert werden. Dazu gehört eine Suche nach Chat-Räumen und eine Kontaktliste für befreundete Nutzer. Die Features sollen demnächst aber folgen, sicherte Williams zu. Die Kontaktliste soll so gestaltet werden, dass die ausschließlich ihrem Besitzer zugänglich ist. Williams will auch die einzelnen Kontakte zwischen zwei Nutzern jeweils durch einen separaten Magnet-Link repräsentieren, der jeweils erzeugt wird, wenn die Freundschafts-Beziehung von beiden Seiten bestätigt wird.

Auf diesem Weg soll es später einfach möglich sein, sich in den Chat-Schwarm einzuklinken, in dem der gewünschte Gesprächspartner gerade zu finden ist. Auf diese Weise bleibt der Kontakt auch erhalten, wenn einer der Nutzer den Chat-Namen ändert. Die Verifikation der Freundschaftsanfrage läuft außerdem verschlüsselt ab. In späteren Versionen soll es außerdem möglich sein, die gesamte Kommunikation mit Krypto-Verfahren abzusichern.

There have been huge improvements to the plugin engine, and that is still currently being refined. The next few upcoming versions should have the core of the plugin engine completed. The plugins folder has been moved from the AppData folder to the Program Files\IceChat\Plugins folder to allow unloading and reloading of plugins on the fly.

ChateX is a new client-server all in one chat program developed to operate quickly. RC2 has been released today, with many updates and fixed from RC1. The plugin framework has finally reached a stage of stability, and more plugins can finally be made.

Because if the major changes to the plugin engine, no actual update will be available internally to IceChat 9, the full install will need to be downloaded to update to this version. Further releases should not have this problem.

Wippien sieht zwar wie ein normaler Messenger aus, der unter anderem mit den Protokollen von ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, AIM, Jabber und Google Talk zurecht kommt, aber Wippien ist auch eine VPN-Software, die Computer miteinander verbinden kann.Dadurch kann man den Fremd-PC steuern oder Dateien miteinander tauschen.

Um Wippien auf einem 64-bit-System zu nutzen, muss noch ein Treiber installiert werden, den man von dieser Seite bekommt.
