Open Broadcaster Software macht aus dem eigenen Rechner sowohl ein Fernseh- als auch ein Radio-Studio. Der kostenlose Rekorder erfasst sowohl Video- als auch Audio-Signale und überträgt diese als Live-Stream in Echtzeit in das weltweite Datennetz.

Hierfür nutzt Open Broadcaster Software zum Beispiel Online-Portale wie etwa JustinTV oder DailyMotion, streamt aber optional auch auf benutzerdefiniert eingetragene Server. Da die Freeware alternativ ihre Aufnahmen zunächst auf Festplatte speichert, lassen sich diese bei Bedarf nachträglich überarbeiten und auf YouTube und Co. veröffentlichen.

Open Broadcaster Software lässt dem Benutzer weitgehend freie Hand, welche Inhalte aufgenommen oder übertragen werden sollen. In so genannten Szenen stellt man etwa das Geschehen in einem Programmfenster, das Signal einer Webcam, Standbilder oder auch Texteinblendungen zu einem Stream beziehungsweise einer Aufnahme zusammen.

Als nützlich erweisen sich zudem Plugins, welche das Mikrofonrauschen reduzieren oder Open Broadcaster Software für die Aufnahme von Gaming-Videos optimieren. Für findige und erfahrene Anwender steht eine API zur Verfügung, mit deren Hilfe ganz eigene Plugins entwickelt werden können, was den PC-Sender endgültig zu einer feinen Sache werden lässt.

SopCast is free tool to watch TV and video, and listen to music and other audio streams on your PC. The software is also configurable as a broadcaster to deliver your own content to an online audience via P2P. Using your home computer with a broadband connection you can stream your video and audio to thousands of people. Many TV stations and Video-on-Demand services are accessible through the Web. Some channels are pre-defined but the Internet holds thousands more that broadcast live and on-demand content like sports, documentaries, TV shows and news from dozens of countries. To watch them SopCast uses Windows Media Player by default but allows to connect other media players like VLC or Miro.
