Die offene Firewall- und Routingplattform OPNsense wurde in einer neuen Version veröffentlicht. Neu in OPNsense 19.7 sind unter anderem Erweiterungen der Anwendungen und der Sicherheit sowie Verbesserungen beim Reporting und Logging.

OPNsense ist eine offene Firewall- und Routingplattform, die auf FreeBSD basiert und die Anwender durch ihre Funktionalität und Einfachheit überzeugen will. Das System wurde 2014 als Fork von pfSense, das seinerseits eine Abspaltung von m0n0wall war, gestartet und 2015 in einer ersten stabilen Version herausgegeben. Die Funktionalität von OPNsense umfasst neben den grundlegenden Eigenschaften eines Firewall-Systems unter anderem die Möglichkeit einer Beschränkung und Prioritätsvergaben. Die Authentifizierung kann durch diverse Sicherheitsmechanismen erweitert werden und umfasst unter anderem eine Zweifaktorauthentifikation. Des Weiteren unterstützt OPNsense die Einrichtung von VPN-Netzwerken und Failover-Szenarien und kann als Caching-Dienst eingesetzt werden. Das auf Suricata aufbauende Inline Intrusion Prevention System erkennt ferner Einbruchsversuche.

Knapp sechs Monate nach der letzten Version steht mit OPNsense 19.7 »Jazzy Jaguar« planmäßig eine neue Version des Systems zum Bezug bereit. Die aktuelle Ausgabe beinhaltet zahlreiche Änderungen und konzentriert sich auf die Verbesserung der allgemeinen Benutzbarkeit. Die Statistikausgabe und Anzeige der Firewall-Regeln wurde weiter ausgebaut. Zudem haben die Entwickler das Logging des Systems verbessert, das unter anderem auf syslog-ng aufsetzt und die Möglichkeit eines Remote-Zugriffs anbietet. Zudem wurde Netmap einer Aktualisierung unterzogen. Weitere Neuerungen umfassen Anpassungen an Plug-ins und eine bessere Internationalisierung, die unter anderem auch Spanisch beinhaltet.

OPNsense 19.7 kann vom Server des Projektes sowie zahlreichen Spiegel-Servern heruntergeladen werden. Die Software steht unter einer 2-Klausel BSD-Lizenz und wird in diversen Varianten angeboten. Kommerzieller Support wird durch das die hinter der Distribution stehende Deciso B.V. bereitgestellt.

TinyWall ist eine zweite Verteidigungslinie hinter der in Windows eingebauten Firewall. Die Freeware kontrolliert den ein- und ausgehenden Datenfluss und blockt unautorisierten Datenaustausch.

TinyWall verzichtet bewusst auf Popup-Meldungen an den Anwender. Statt dessen arbeitet die Sicherheitssoftware mit so genannten White-Listen. Bis auf die wichtigsten Windows-Dienste blockt TinyWall zunächst alle Apps die eine Datenverbindung aufbauen wollen. Um eine Freigabe zu erhalten, steuert man die Software via dem Programmmenü in der Taskleiste. Hier editiert man mit wenigen Mausklicks die Verbindungsfreigabe sowie die Whitelist oder deaktiviert die Firewall.

Mit dem kostenlosen TinyWall verbessern sicherheitsbewusste Nutzer ihren Schutz bei Ausflügen ins Netz. Die Freeware sollte jedoch immer nur als sinnvolle Ergänzung zu einer bestehenden Firewall beziehungsweise Antivirensoftware angesehen werden.
