Mit dem Videochat-Programm Ekiga lassen sich VoIP-Gespräche über das Internet führen. Die Freeware unterstützt Microsofts NetMeeting, den Internet-Standard SIP und das H.323-Protokoll.

Ekiga trug in der Vorgängerversion den Namen "GnomeMeeting". Die Freeware kommt ursprünglich aus der Linux-Welt, ist aber auch in einer Windows-Fassung erschienen. Bei Internet-Telefonaten und Videokonferenzen leistet die VoIP-Software nützliche Dienste.

Auch optisch hat Ekiga einiges zu bieten. Die Sprachqualität ist bemerkenswert gut. Die Freeware verwendet ebenso wie Skype SILK als Audio-Codec. Die Bildübertragung läuft dank H.264-Optimierungen akzeptabel und ohne Ruckeln.

Ein Ekiga-Account kann kostenfrei verwendet werden, um mit Freunden oder Kollegen zu telefonieren. Wenn man die Kontodaten eines SIP-Anbieters einträgt, lasen sich auch kostenpflichtige Gespräche zu beliebigen Telefonnummern führen. Wer eine Alternative zu Skype sucht, sollte einen Blick auf Ekiga werfen.
