Microsoft will seinen VoIP-Dienst Skype langfristig vollkommen neu gestalten und dabei mit Hilfe einer von Google unter Open-Source-Lizenz gestellten Technologie eine neue, Browser-basierte Version einführen, die zudem mit anderen ähnlichen Diensten interoperabel ist.

In einer Stellenausschreibung sucht Microsoft laut 'GigaOM' derzeit unter anderem einen Ingenieur für Software-Entwicklung, der bei der Schaffung einer neuen Architektur für Skype helfen soll, die eine "direkte Interoperation von WebRTC-fähigen Endpunkten mit anderen Endpunkten im Skype-Netzwerk ohne die Notwendigkeit von Gateways" ermöglicht.

Im Grunde bedeutet dies, dass Skype eine Browser-basierte Anwendung anbieten will, die direkt und ohne eventuell nötige Gateway-Server mit den bisher erhältlichen eigenständigen Skype-Clients kommunizieren kann. Dazu soll die Funktionsweise von Skype neu gestaltet werden, ohne dass man viel Geld für Gateways ausgibt, die eine Verbindung zu alten Skype-Versionen herstellen. Als Vehikel dafür will Microsoft auf WebRTC setzen. Letztlich könnte Skype so auf jedem beliebigen Endgerät verwendet werden, das über einen HMTL5-fähigen Browser und die benötigte Audio- und Video-Hardware verfügt.

WebRTC ermöglicht Echtzeitkommunikation über das Web inklusive Sprach- und Video-Chat im Browser, ohne dass dafür wie bisher ein spezielles Plug-In oder eine Erweiterung benötigt wird. Das Framework basiert auf Technologien, die Google im Rahmen der Übernahme des VoIP-Spezialisten Global IP Solutions vor rund zwei Jahren übernommen hat. Es nutzt den VP8 Video-Codec, der von Google vor einiger Zeit ebenfalls unter eine Open-Source-Lizenz gestellt wurde.

Google will WebRTC selbst bei den kommenden Versionen von Google Talk und Google+ Hangouts einsetzen - bisher benötigen die Nutzer jeweils Browser-Plug-Ins. Seit einiger Zeit gibt es Bemühungen, WebRTC zu einem Web-Standard zu machen, was von Mozilla, Opera und nun wohl auch Microsoft unterstützt wird.

Offiziell will man sich bei Skype zu dem Thema noch nicht konkret äußern, die Job-Angebote sprechen jedoch eine deutliche Sprache. So sollen die neuen Mitarbeiter helfen, mit Skype künftig "Milliarden (Nutzer) zu erreichen". Dass man dabei zunehmend auf freie Technologien setzt, macht unter anderem der Umstand deutlich, dass die Funktion für Video-Chats mit Gruppen inzwischen den VP8-Codec nutzt.
