Von dem vor einigen Wochen angekündigten Vorhaben, in dem freien Browser beim Öffnen der Seite für einen neuen Tab Werbung anzuzeigen, haben sich die Entwickler nun verabschiedet.

Anfang Februar hatten die Entwickler des freien Browsers Firefox angekündigt, in Zukunft auf der Seite für frisch geöffnete Tabs in bestimmten Fällen Werbung einzublenden. Die Chefin der Mozilla-Stiftung, Mitchell Baker, begründete dies seinerzeit mit geänderten Erwartungen der Anwender und vermutete, die Mehrheit der Nutzer begrüße die Neuerung.

Die Entwickler des freien Browsers wollen wie ihre Konkurrenz das vom W3C entwickelte System zum Schutz von Streaming-Inhalten umsetzen. Schriftsteller Cory Doctorow zeigt sich schwer enttäuscht.

Mit Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) will das W3C einen Kopierschutz für Browser schaffen und so Inhalteanbieter von Produkten wie Flash zu seiner eigenen HTML5-Technik locken. Als letzter der großen Browser-Anbieter hat nun die Mozilla Foundation ihren Widerstand gegen EME aufgegeben, wie ihr Technik-Chef Andreas Gal in einem Blog-Beitrag schreibt.

Wir "hätten es lieber gesehen, dass die Anbieter sich von der Verknüpfung ihrer Inhalte mit einem bestimmten Gerät verabschieden und Alternativen entwickelt hätten," sagt Gal. Stattdessen sei diese Herangehensweise nun im EME-Vorschlag festgeschrieben. Da Google und Microsoft die Technik in ihren Browsern bereits einsetzen, liefen Firefox-Anwender Gefahr, DRM-geschützte Inhalte in Zukunft nicht mehr nutzen zu können. Diese machten in Nordamerika bereits über 30 Prozent des Downstream-Verkehrs im Netz aus.

Anlässlich der Mozilla-Entscheidung verstärkt der Schriftsteller und Blog-Autor Cory Doctorow die Reihe der Kritiker um ein prominentes Mitglied. In einem langen Beitrag für den britischen Guardian äußert er einerseits Verständnis für die Firefox-Entwickler. Allerdings betrachtet er Gals Argument skeptisch: "Es steht außer Frage, dass […] Video-Streaming einen großen Teil des Internetverkehrs ausmacht. Aber dabei handelt es sich eben auch um die größten Dateien überhaupt. Dass Video-Streams viele Bytes brauchen, ist keine Überraschung." Er vermisse eine solide, mit Daten untermauerte Begründung für die Entscheidung.

EME spezifiziert eine offene DRM-API für Browser, die Inhalteanbieter für das Installieren und Nutzen spezieller, proprietärer Kopierschutzverfahren nutzen können. Anders als andere Browser, schreibt Gal, werde Firefox keine Identifizierung ("fingerprinting") seiner Nutzer zulassen, sodass deren Privatsphäre geschützt bliebe.

Firefox still uses more memory than most other web browsers. Truthfully, the amount it uses is ridiculous. Firefox can use up to 500MBs of memory if you keep it running. In addition, you will see that the memory usage keeps rising because of, you guessed it, memory leaks. Some Firefox users even reported memory usage over 1000MBs. That is half of the memory gone on most computers.

A solution to this issue is Firemin, a simple application that can help you eliminate all the memory leaks of Firefox. Firemin uses a safe API function called EmptyWorkingSet that basically forces the process (in this case Firemin) to use less memory. Other words, tells Firefox to give back some of the system memory it's hanging on to. Using this function will sometimes result in a slight performance decrease measured in milliseconds , but I do mean slight, the chance of you noticing the performance decrease is almost zero.
