Google Chrome gehört schon jetzt zu den schnellsten Webbrowsern und soll noch wesentlich schneller werden.

Wie die Entwickler James Robinson und Gregg Tavares im offiziellen Chromium-Blog schreiben, sind frühe Versionen von Chrome 7  bereits bis zu 60 Mal schneller als Chrome 6. Gemessen wurde dies nicht etwa mit einem auf Chrome optimierten Benchmark, sondern mit den 2D-Demos, die Microsoft für seinen neuen Internet Explorer 9 online gestellt hat.

Die neue hardware-basierte 2D-Beschleunigung, die bisher nur in instabilen Versionen und noch nicht vollständig vorhanden ist, sucht sich auf Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X und Linux automatisch die jeweils schnellste vorhandene Schnittstelle aus. Mit dieser Ankündigung widersprechen die Entwickler in gewisser Weise den Behauptungen von Microsoft, dass nur ein reiner Windows-Browser wie der Internet Explorer 9 wirklich auf ein Betriebssystem optimiert sein könne.
Die neuen Fähigkeiten von Chrome sollten aufgrund der schnellen Entwicklungszyklen von nur sechs Wochen schon bald in den offiziellen Versionen des Browsers auftauchen.
