Die Pinta-Entwickler haben Version 1.4 ihres freien Paint-Klons veröffentlicht. Zu den neuen Funktionen des Zeichenprogramms zählt die Unterstützung für Copy und Paste im Textwerkzeug, das jetzt auch Sonderzeichen beherrschen soll. Das Zauberstab-Werkzeug bringt die neuen Auswahlmodi "Union", "Exclude", "Xor" und "Intersect" mit, um die Auswahl nicht zusammenhängender Bereich zu verfeinern. Die Farbpipette kann Farben nun nicht mehr nur aus einzelnen Pixeln entnehmen, sondern zur Farbwahl auch größere Bereiche aus einer einzelnen Ebene oder dem kompletten Bild berücksichtigen.

Die neue Version soll jetzt auch besser mit Erweiterungen zurecht kommen, wobei auch die Installation aus entfernten Quellen möglich ist. Neben den neuen Funktionen listen die Release Notes eine ganze Reihe von Fehler auf, die in der neuen Version behoben wurden. Die Software steht unter der freien MIT X11-Lizenz und ist für Linux, Mac OS X und Windows verfügbar.

Inkscape ist ein kostenlos erhältlicher Vektor-Grafik-Editor mit enormem Funktionsumfang. Ursprünglich war das Programm eine rein für Unix entwickelte Software, die seit der Version 0.4 jedoch auch für Windows verfügbar ist.

Die Entwickler der freien Grafikanwendung MyPaint haben an Silvester 2012 Version 1.1 veröffentlicht. MyPaint ist für Linux, Mac OS X und MS Windows erhältlich und soll es Künstlern ermöglichen, sich auf ihre Kunst zu konzentrieren, ohne von der Funktionsvielfalt des Programms abgelenkt zu werden.

MyPaint verfügt über eine Leinwand mit automatischer Größenanpassung und eine minimalistische Nutzeroberfläche, die nur bei Bedarf eingeblendet wird. Die Anwendung bringt bereits viele Malwerkzeuge mit und arbeitet sehr gut mit drucksensitiven Grafiktablets zusammen. In MyPaint 1.1, das gut 13 Monate nach Version 1.0 erscheint, wurden unter anderem neue Geometriewerkzeuge eingeführt, mit denen sich Folgen von Linien, Kurven und elliptische Linien zeichnen lassen. Das freihändige Zeichnen ist jetzt nur noch einer der möglichen Linien-Modi. Die Pinsel und die Ebenen erhielten neue Methoden zur Überblendung. Im Farbdialog wurden die Auswahl von Farben und das Arbeiten mit Farbharmonien überarbeitet. Anstelle der bisherigen Farbharmonie-Werkzeuge gibt es jetzt einen Editor für Farbpalettenmasken.

CAD-optimiertes Werkzeug zum Vektorisieren gerasterter Vorlagen

RasterVect hilft vor allem CAD-Anwendern beim Umsetzen gerasterter Vorlagen in Vektorgrafiken. Als Datenquelle dienen der Freeware sowohl auf der Festplatte gespeicherte Bilder als auch papierene und per Scanner eingelesene Grafiken.

Im Unterschied zu den meisten Vertretern seines Genres wandelt RasterVect Rasterbilder nicht einfach nur in Linienansammlungen um, sondern optimiert diese für den CAD-Einsatz. Dies zeigt sich unter anderem darin, dass bestimmte gestalterische Elemente direkt als Block-Einheiten vektorisiert werden. Gesetzt den Fall, dass die Vektorisierung nicht ganz optimal vonstatten geht, arbeitet man die Vektor-Grafiken manuell nach.

An Ausgabeformaten bietet RasterVect vor allem den CAD-Standard DXF an. Alternativ gibt der Helfer die Vektoren aber auch als WMF, EMF, EPS sowie dem Adobe Illustrator Format AI aus.
